Just Stop Oil joins thousands demanding a general election and action on the cost of living crisis

Just Stop Oil supporters have joined a national demonstration with thousands of people to demand an immediate general election and action to tackle the cost of living and climate crisis by ending new fossil fuel licences and consents. [1]

People from all over the country, trade unions and community organisations have been taking part in a march from Embankment to Trafalgar Square, organised by the People’s Assembly campaign group.[2]

Around 150 Just Stop Oil supporters peeled off from the main demonstration and marched around Tafalgar Square repeatedly sitting down in the road with their banners. Police have made 5 arrests.

Indigo Rumblelow, a spokesperson for Just Stop Oil said:

“The actions of selfish politicians and their advisors has brought the economy to its knees and pushed millions of people into poverty.

“But it’s worse than that: after decades of climate misinformation and delay, we face an existential crisis. We are going to lose all we hold dear.  We need to ditch new oil and gas now and we need to change our politics, so that in future everyone can have a say in the decisions that will determine the future of humanity.”

Just Stop Oil continues to peacefully resist the government’s plans to licence over 100 new oil and gas projects by 2025, and its failure to fulfil its promise to help people with their skyrocketing energy bills. Policy failures that will force millions into poverty and facing a choice between heating, eating, or providing the basic essentials for themselves and their families.

Today’s action follows a short pause after four weeks of continuous civil resistance by supporters of Just Stop Oil which ended on November 1st. During that period the police made 684 arrests. Since the campaign began on April 1st, Just Stop Oil supporters have been arrested nearly 2,000 times, with 5 supporters currently in prison.[3]
