Just Stop Oil is temporarily relocating its offices to Koppel X, an event space and creative hub at Piccadilly Circus from 1st June. [1]
The civil resistance group will occupy the art space. Their supporters will become the exhibit, showing the public that they are ordinary people with nothing to hide.
This forms part of the larger intervention ‘You May Find Yourself…’ happening simultaneously in the Koppel X space created by Just Stop Oil supporters, running from 2nd – 3rd June. A private view on 2nd June will be followed by a public opening on 3rd June (free admission). The event launches a digital art auction containing hundreds of pieces that runs for two weeks.[2]
Known across the globe for targeting artworks and cultural events with non-violent direct action, Just Stop Oil supporters have continued to engage with contemporary artists, academics and activists.[3]
Gavin Turk, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Andrei Molodkin, Jamie Reid, Boy George and more will showcase their works in support of Just Stop Oil’s demand: that the British government immediately halts all new fossil fuel licensing and consents.
Standing with them are FILET space, The Koppel Project, The Auction Collective, and the Vivienne Foundation.
Jeremy Till, Former Head of Central Saint Martins and Pro Vice-Chancellor of University of the Arts London said:
“Just Stop Oil has utilised art in their activism brilliantly – the soup on sunflowers and the searing after image of orange powder on the green baize snooker table. The wonderful artists contributing to this auction in solidarity are part of that protest.’
Rebecca Marcus-Monks, Director Of Operations at The Koppel Project said:
“The Koppel Project is committed to its mission of fostering meaningful artistic dialogue. Supporting the “You May Find Yourself…” intervention is a natural extension of our dedication to driving positive change through art. By hosting this, we emphasise our role as a catalyst for transformative conversations. This opportunity allows us to leverage our platform to raise awareness and engage audiences towards a sustainable future where creativity and environmental consciousness coexist harmoniously.”
Brenna Horrox Curator at FILET space said:
“This is an important intervention to show the art community stands with climate activists in the fight against further environmental exploitation and vice versa that climate activists value the art and artists now and want this to exist into the future. “
Individual artists and art institutions are coming together at this critical moment to send a clear message to the British government – we resist as one.
This is where we find ourselves, living at a crisis point that will birth a new age. This is an intervention. And this is just the beginning.
