Dear all,
We are eight women currently imprisoned at HMP Bronzefield. The eight of us are part of a group of 26 peaceful people from the climate movement who are imprisoned in the UK for nonviolent civil resistance.
This figure is rising almost daily. It feels important to recognise that we form part of a global struggle for justice, rights and survival in which many ordinary people around the world are imprisoned and murdered for standing up against injustice.
While we are grateful for the support you have shown to date, it is often said that those with the broadest shoulders should carry the greatest responsibility. We are writing to encourage you to use your celebrity status effectively at this time because people’s lives depend on it. People, like yourselves, who can see and emotionally connect with the horrors unfolding on a daily basis around the world due to climate breakdown, must step up and risk arrest through peaceful and disruptive action. We urge you to use your platform not to thank us or share outrage about our imprisonment. We need you to do more than just cheer us on, we need you to join us in police cells, in the courts and in prison. In this struggle, facts and logic are not enough. In order for the truth to be heard, the public needs to see moral leadership, visible commitment and sacrifice.
In 2024, whilst war, famine, fires and floods cause death and suffering to millions of people, the UK government continues to condemn millions more to death, by failing to plan for an end to UK oil, gas and coal by 2030 and by not revoking Conservative licences for new oil and gas projects such as Cambo and Rosebank. Just Stop Oil has a plan to use nonviolent civil resistance to pressure the politicians and leaders to make the policy changes that are so urgently needed. What are you waiting for?
Yours respectfully,
Cressie Gethin, 22, sentenced to 4 years
Hannah Schafer, 60, remanded
Jane Touil, 58, remanded
Lou Lancaster, 58 sentenced to 4 years
Lucia Whittaker, 35, sentenced to 4 years
Phoebe Plummer, 22, remanded and awaiting sentencing
Rosa Hicks, 28, remanded
Sally Davidson, 36, remanded

[1] Just Stop Oil is a member of the A22 Network of civil resistance projects.
Critical seed funding for Just Stop Oil was provided by Climate Emergency Fund and Adam McKay in 2022 and 2023. Just Stop Oil is now largely backed by small donations from the public, although the Climate Emergency Fund continues to contribute.
Just Stop Oil ‘Blue Lights’ policy: our policy is, and has always been, to move out of the way for emergency vehicles with siren sounding and ‘blue lights’ on.
We take all possible steps to ensure that no-one’s safety is compromised by our actions.
Our Demand: An end to oil, gas and coal by 2030.
Our governments must work together to establish a legally binding treaty to stop extracting and burning oil, gas and coal by 2030 as well as supporting and financing poorer countries to make a fast, fair, and just transition.
This can be accomplished by endorsing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and seeking a negotiating mandate to establish the treaty.
